March // WHILE YOU WAIT

The press has had a fill day with the story of Olajumoke Orisaguna, the bread seller who rose to prominence because she ‘photo – bumped’ Tinie Tempahs photoshoot by Ty Bello.
A lot has been said of how lucky she is etc and today, I would like to draw some life lessons from her inspirational story.

Olajumoke is truly a beauty and I wonder if she ever looked at glamour magazines and though, ‘I should be a model’: I wonder if she ever looked at herself and said ‘I should be more than a bread seller’. While we might never know the answer to these, one thing is certain – Olajumoke was skilled in the art of “selling her bread” Being originally from Nigeria, I have been opportune to see the progression of a ‘bread seller’: it starts with a smaller tray, supported by both hands, then the tray gets bigger, the hawker gets more confident and reaches a stage where she can carry so much bread in her tray and balance it on her head without any support whatsoever. Looking at the picture again, Olajumoke was at that skilled/expert stage… I guess this informs us of what that 1st lesson should be. What are you doing right now, and how have you developed your skills/expertise in it. Are you standing out in the daily pursuit of uour income-generating activities?

Secondly, there is also the part of being in the right place at the right time. I can’t help wondering if Olajumoke had decided not to go out on the day… Luck you may say, but I believe it was more an instance of opportunity meeting preparation. In the words of Seneca, the Roman philosopher, “Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity”. Can I encourage you to consistently show – up, employ excellence in all you do, while you wait for the opportunity to arrive, remembering that good things come to those who WAIT (the Doyin way) by

  • Working harder
  • Assisting others
  • Improving daily and
  • Taking my chances

As long as you WAIT for this luck to come our way, our preparation will definitely set a path for the right opportunity!
